Professional Background
Dr. Mary P. Guerrera is an Associate Professor and Director
of Integrative Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine at
the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She received
her A.B. cum laude from Mount Holyoke College and her
M.D. from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Dr. Guerrera completed Residency Training in Family Medicine
at the Maine Medical Center/Mercy Hospital Family Medicine
Training Program in Portland, Maine. She has been actively
involved in teaching medical students and residents since that
time. Dr. Guerrera is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family
Physicians and an active member of the Society of Teachers of
Family Medicine. In addition, she is Board Certified in Medical
Acupuncture and is a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of
Holistic Medicine.
She has also completed advanced training in Mind-Body
Medicine. Her academic activities include serving on the
steering committee of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers
for Integrative Medicine and as co-Chair of their education
working group. Dr. Guerrera is a member of the School of
Medicine’s Education Council and Committee for Undergraduate
Medical Education. She is the course director for the medical
school electives: ‘The Healer’s Art’ and ‘Mind-Body-Spirit
Medicine.’
She served as Principle Investigator of the Educational
Development for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Project
Grant awarded to the School of Medicine by the American Medical
Student Association Foundation (2003-2007), and is currently
embarking upon a 5 year national, multi-site Integrative
Medicine in Residency Project with the University of Arizona’s
Program in Integrative Medicine. She is frequently invited to
present regionally and nationally, and has published scholarly
work in her field.
Recognized via an award from students and peers, she was
inducted into the Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society in
2004. Dr. Guerrera maintains an active clinical practice within
the Department of Family Medicine’s Residency Program.

Educational Interests
Dr. Guerrera is leading the Department of Family Medicine
Residency Training Program in the Integrative Medicine in
Residence (IMR), a 250-hour curriculum development project of
the University of Arizona’s Center of Integrative Medicine that
will create and deliver competency-based online integrative
medical training to residents. IMR is initially being piloted in
eight, nationally selected family medicine residencies with the
goal of expanding to primary care and subspecialty training
programs throughout the US and abroad. In addition, her interest
in and commitment to humanism in medicine led to launching Dr.
Rachel Remen’s “The Healers Art – Awakening the Heart of
Medicine” within the School of Medicine in 2007. She enjoys
working with students and residents in the clinical setting
where she weaves acupuncture and mind-body medicine into her
integrative medicine, family medicine practice.

Research Interests
Dr. Guerrera enjoys teaching and learning with students and
residents who are interested in educational/curricular research
projects related to integrative, complementary and alternative
medicine. In addition, she is interested in exploring and
developing concepts of optimal learning environments.
